Five Drummers

The Quarrymen morphed into the Silver Beatles and finally became “The Beatles”, just before embarking on their first Hamburg trip in August 1960. Their first drummer, Pete Best, joined just before this trip.

In June 1962 the Beatles recorded the first version of Love Me Do. Shortly after this, the band sacked Pete Best. The reasons for his removal vary, depending on who is answering the question, Why?”

Ringo Starr replaced Pete Best. Johnny Hutchinson, from Liverpool group The Big Three, stood in for a couple of gigs between Pete leaving and Ringo Starr joining. This was not Johnny Hutchinson’s first outing with the group. He stood in at the failed Billy Fury audition in May 1960, when they were still called “The Silver Beatles”.

Ringo recorded the second version of Love Me Do but producer George Martin was unhappy with his performance. For the third and final recording of Love Me Do, George Martin brought in session drummer Andy White.

On the eve of their first world tour in June 1964, Ringo developed tonsillitis. For the first leg of the tour Jimmy Nicol became the fifth Beatles drummer. Jimmy Nicol was previously with Colin Hicks and the Cabin Boys, Georgie Fame and his own group the Shubdubs.
