Elvis Presley Behind the Legend

16 August 2022 is the 45th anniversary of Elvis’s untimely death.

Elvis Presley Behind the Legend
Three faces of the King of Rock’n’Roll

Elvis had a unique career and certainly deserves his title of the King of Rock’n’Roll. Following his rise to fame in the 1950s, he spent two years in the US Army.

When Elvis returned in 1960 the music scene had changed completely. It changed again in 1964, with the advent of the British Invasion. During that period British acts dominated the American music scene. Furthermore, it was all change once again in 1965/’66 when beat music morphed into the much harder-edged rock music.

Shortly after Elvis’s return from the Army, his manager Colonel Tom Parker made the decision to have Hollywood movies as the cornerstone of Elvis’s future. As a result, Elvis did not make any public appearances and most of his singles and albums were taken from the movie soundtracks.

In 1969 Elvis’s movie career ended with his 31st movie as an actor, Change of Habit. Once again it was time for a change. This time, Elvis became the ultimate cabaret act with a run of residencies in Las Vegas.

In the show we look particularly at the role Colonel Tom Parker played in shaping Elvis’s career and consider if it was for the better or worse?

Derek Shelmerdine

Derek Shelmerdine is the author of the book Rock’n’Roll Unravelled. With its unique three-part structure, it tells the story of rock’n’roll from its roots to mid-1970s punk. More than that, the book looks at the social events which influenced the songs. Firstly, events such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights struggle in America. This also embraces individual events, such as the assassination of President Kennedy and Dr Martin Luther King.
