Atlantic Records Story

Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson formed Atlantic Records in New York in 1947. Stick McGhee and His Buddies scored the first big hit for Atlantic with Drinking Wine Spo-De-O-Dee in 1949.

Atlantic Records Story
Stick McGee

In the early 1950s Atlantic Records had a steady stream of R&B hits from the likes of, Ruth Brown, The Clovers, Big Joe Turner and Ray Charles.

Jerry Wexler joined the label in 1953, when Herb Abramson was drafted into the US Army. When Abramson returned from the Army two years later, Jerry Wexler stayed on. The Atco label was set up and run by Abramson.

R&B and doo wop success continued throughout the 1950s. In the 1960s some of the Atlantic artists developed more of a soul music sound. In fact, Atlantic became one of the driving forces of 1960s soul music. International success followed for a number of artists including, Sam and Dave, Wilson Picket and Aretha Franklin. This was augmented by their relationship with the Stax record label.

As beat music morphed into rock music in the mid-1960s, Atlantic embraced this harder edged rock’n’roll with both arms. Cream, Buffalo Springfield and the country rock Crosby Stills and Nash all helped Atlantic sustain its reputation as one of the strongest labels around. This success continued, as Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and a host of others continued to break new ground.
