Psychedelic rock emerged as a new music genre in the mid-1960s.

The music wanted to expand the mind and replicate the effects of hallucinogenic drugs, such as LSD and magic mushrooms.

The light shows and silent movies projected onto the wall behind the band, all became a part of the concert.

The approach to psychedelia was different on either side of the Atlantic. In Britain the music involved more special effects and changing time signatures, accompanied by whimsical lyrics. Whereas, in America the music was more blues based and enjoyed long meandering guitar solos.

New bands emerged, Pink Floyd, 13th Floor Elevators and many others but by the end of the 1960s the golden age of psychedelic rock was all-but over.
