1960s Musical Odyssey

In this Rock’n’Roll Unravelled Show, we’re taking a look at how the music developed in, arguably, the most formative decade in pop music history – the 1960s.

The decade started with a divergence of music scenes on either side of the Atlantic. In the UK the 1950s skiffle and rock’n’roll bands morphed into beat group. Whereas, in America the golden age of rock’n’roll faded away and new musical scenes took over, including, surf music, dance crazes and Phil Spector’s wall of sound.

In 1964 the Beatles led the way for the “British Invasion” and for the next two years British artists and bands dominated the American Music scene.

By mid-1966 beat groups had been replaced by the much harder-edged rock bands. Cream and Jimi Hendrix were at the forefront of this new music. The “British Invasion” was over and new American bands such as the Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane and the Doors were making their mark.

As the 1960s slipped into the 1970s, the music had splintered into a host of new musical genres, psychedelic, prog, folk rock, glam, metal, jazz rock and so many more…

ROCK’N’ROLL UNRAVELLED SHOW

How rock’n’roll came about, it’s transition into rock music in the mid-1960s and the array of rock genres which followed in the late 1960s and ‘70s.

Blues, R&B, rock’n’roll, rock, prog, folk rock, country rock, psychedelia, glam, early metal, punk, new wave +++… will all find their way into the shows. Plus artists and bands, some well known and others who are more on the cult side. Stories behind classic singles and albums, record labels, venues, gigs… Not forgetting the people behind the scenes: producers, managers, promoters, writers, Svengalis – the people who made it all happen.

If it’s relevant to the music of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, I’ll be talking about it.
All this and great music, although, some you’ll recognise and some you might well be hearing for the first time.
