The Beatles Led the British Invasion

In the mid-1960s British artists dominated the US music scene… in what became known as the “British Invasion”
…..The Beatles Led the British Invasion

For three years in the mid-1960s, British bands dominated the US music scene.

On 25 Jan 1964 the Beatles’ first release on the American Capitol Records label, I Want to Hold Your Hand entered the Billboard chart and gave them a #1 for 7 weeks.

The Beatles with Ed Sullivan

They made their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show on 9 February, with 73-million people tuning in. Also appearing on the show was a pre-Monkees Davy Jones.

The Beatles’ success with their first Capitol Records single and appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show triggered what became known as the “British Invasion. For the first time in pop music history, British artists found sustained success in America.

The Beatles had three more Billboard hits almost immediately. They were soon followed by other British hit makers, The Dave Clark Five, The Searchers, The Swinging Blue Jeans and Gerry and the Pacemakers.

American bands even adopted British sounding names, such as The Beau Brummels and The Beefeaters. Although, the Beefeaters did find their own international success after they changed their name to – The Byrds.

For the next 3 years British groups dominated the American music scene. This all changed again in 1966, when rock music emerged on both sides of Atlantic.
