Godfathers of British Blues

In this Rock’n’Roll Unravelled Show, we’re taking a look at the two Godfathers of Bitish blues, Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers.

The show focuses on some of the artists who played with either, or both, bands and went on to form some of the biggest bands of the 1960s – and beyond…

Godfathers of British Blues
Blues Incorporated: May 1962

All of The Rolling Stones, with the exception of bassist Bill Wyman performed in Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated. In fact, Mick Jagger and Keith Richard met Brian Jones and Charlie Watts when they went to see them at a Blues Incorporated gig.
Charlie Watts was Blues Incorporated’s original drummer.

Before forming Cream, guitarist Eric Clapton played with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, drummer Ginger Baker was with Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated and bassist Jack Bruce spent time with both bands.
Ginger Baker replaced future-Rolling Stone Charlie Watts when he parted company with Alexis Korner to join Blues by Six.

Peter Green replaced Eric Clapton in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers (for the second time) when Clapton left to form Cream. For three months, at the beginning of 1967, the John Mayall lineup also included drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie. Peter Green set up Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac with Mick Fleetwood and they were joined shortly afterwards by John McVie .

Cyril Davies

Harmonica player Cyril Davies was closely associated with Alexis Korner in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He parted company with Korner in late 1962 to form his own band, The Rhythm and Blues All Stars. This brings in links to future-Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Long John Baldry and later-to-be-an-international-superstar Rod Stewart.

The Bluesbreakers and Blues Incorporated also have strong links to lots of other bands, including Colosseum, Free and Manfred Mann. Future-Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant also has links to Alexis Korner…

The links to these two Godfathers of British blues just go on… and on… and on….

The Rock’n’Roll Unravelled Show

How rock’n’roll came about, it’s transition into rock music in the mid-1960s and the array of rock genres which followed in the late 1960s and ‘70s.

Blues, R&B, rock’n’roll, rock, prog, folk rock, country rock, psychedelia, glam, early metal, punk, new wave +++… will all find their way into the shows.
Plus artists and bands, some well known and others who are more on the cult side.
Stories behind classic singles and albums, record labels, venues, gigs…
Not forgetting the people behind the scenes: producers, managers, promoters, writers, Svengalis – the people who made it all happen.

If it’s relevant to the music of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, I’ll be talking about it.
All this and great music. Although, some you’ll recognise and some you might well be hearing for the first time.
