MONDAY – August 21 Where It All Began

The first part takes a look at where it all began, in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury; the end of pirate radio with the birth of BBC Radio 1; and the Summer of Love anthem, Procul Harum’s A Whiter Shade of Pale.

Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band: Part 1

The highpoint of the Beatles’ career. In this first part of the look at Sgt Pepper we can see Strawberry Fields break the run of 11 consecutive UK #1s; how the recording came about; clues on the album and sleeve for the “Paul is dead” urban myth and the background to the songs She’s Leaving Home and A Little Help from My Friends.

THURSDAY – August 24
A Time of Change

The beat groups had faded away and the British Invasion had been repelled, as the harder-edged rock bands moved to centre-stage. In the Summer of Love Cream, Jimi Hendrix and the Doors were taking blues-based rock to another level. The Summer of Love also saw the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s debut album Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

FRIDAY – August 25
The Spirit of 1967

The Monterey Pop Festival was one of the first of the new rock festivals featuring the cream of new groups and artists. The Monkees saw Jimi Hendrix and famously invited him to open for them on their current American tour.

New music was everywhere

Van Morrison parted company with Them and started his solo career.  Marc Bolan’s Tyrannosaurus Rex debuted at London’s Middle Earth… so much great music in 1967 – the Summer of Love.
