Derek Shelmerdine is a guest on Adam Tomlinson and Anna Wallace’s afternoon show and will talk about a different rock’n’roll topic on each of the five days. All of the stories are taken from his book Rock’n’Roll Unravelled.

MONDAY 1 August:
The Rise and Fall of American Rock’n’Roll in the 1950s

The story of the rise and fall of American rock’n’roll. The story begins with Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats’ Rocket 88, generally considered to be the first rock’n’roll record.

Bill Haley and His Comets version of (We’re Gonna) Rock around the Clock ignited rock’n’roll when it played behind the opening credits of the movie Blackboard Jungle. The end came with the demise of Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly and Alan Freed.

TUESDAY 2 August:
The Beatles

A whistle-stop look at the Beatles, from the time that John met Paul in 1957 to their parting of the ways in 1970. They failed an audition with Billy Fury, were influenced by beat poet Royston Ellis and Phil Spector rescued their final album.

WEDNESDAY 3 August:
Rock Music Matured in the mid-1960s

By the mid-1960s rock music was becoming far more sophisticated. Jazz and blues inspired Cream and replaced beat music. Pink Floyd introduced psychedelic music. Chas Chandler brought Jimi Hendrix to the UK and across the pond audiences were growing for Andy Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable with the Velvet Underground.
