R&B Before Rock’n’Roll looks at how R&B developed in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, before rock’n’roll exploded onto the scene in the mid-1950s.
It was a natural development of blues music. R&B took elements of jazz, added more instruments and created dance music with a blues feel. Doo wop developed as a close harmony style of R&B but with gentler, less raunchy lyrics.
Meanwhile, rock’n’roll developed alongside R&B and was heavily influenced by it. In fact, many of the rock’n’roll hits of the 1950s and ’60s, were covers of R&B and doo wop songs.
Original broadcast 1 July 2019 on Access North West.
