Pink Floyd’s debut album heralded an era of British psychedelic rock. This pre-David Gilmour album was dominated by the group’s leader Syd Barrett. He wrote ten of the tracks, including two in collaboration with the rest of the group. The only track without a Barrett writing credit was Roger Waters’s song, Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk. The album was named after the title of Chapter 7 of one of Barrett’s favourite books, Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. The song Chapter 24 was inspired by the 5,000 year old Chinese tome, I Ching: The Book of Changes. Barrett was also responsible for the design of the back cover.
Producer Norman “Hurricane” Smith had recently parted company with George Martin, after a long association as engineer on all of the Beatles output since Love Me Do. He also enjoyed personal chart success on both sides of the Atlantic in 1972, with his own composition Oh Babe What Would You Say.
