PODCAST – Music across the 1960s

Music Scene 1960 to 1969

At the beginning of the 1960s the music scenes in the UK and America were totally different.

In the UK at the end of the 1950s, the skiffle groups morphed into beat groups. The Beatles were the first British beat group to have a hit single, with Love Me Do in October 1962.

In America it was a completely different story. With the end of the golden age of rock’n’roll in 1959, the music scene fragmented into completely new genres. Phil Spector emerged with his wall of sound. Tamla and Atlantic Records gave us soul music. Chubby Checker, and others, provided a host of new dance crazes. Surf music brought the Calafornian sunshine to the record charts.

The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on 9 February 1964 and heralded a new period of domination of the American charts by British bands.

In 1966 rock music brought the music scenes back together again on both sides of the Atlantic.

It wasn’t long before this harder edged rock music introduced us to new sounds as musicians experimented with psychedelic and prog rock. More new sub-genres emerged with folk rock, jazz-rock fusion and heavy metal.

The 1960s was an ever-changing music scene and an exciting time to encounter music…
