Jimi Hendrix Story
Jimmy Hendrix played in his first group in 1958.
Before finding international fame he recorded and toured with the likes of Little Richard, the Isley Brothers and Jackie Wilson.
Ex-Animals bass player Chas Chandler saw Hendrix playing with his band, Jimmy James and the Blue Flames, at the Cafe Wha? in New York. As a result, he persuaded Jimmy to relocate to London and change the spelling of his name to Jimi.
The contract he signed with Ed Chalpin in 1965 came back to haunt him after he found fame with the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
He became one of the true rock’n’roll icons but, sadly, died at the age of 27 in 1970…

In its unique three-part format,
Rock’n’Roll Unravelled tells the story of rock’n’roll from its roots to mid-1970s punk.
Social events such as the Vietnam War and Civil Rights struggle are also included because they had a strong influence of the music of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s.
THE ROCK’N’ROLL UNRAVELLED SHOW
We’ll be looking at how rock’n’roll came about, it’s transition into rock music in the mid-1960s and the array of rock genres which followed in the late 1960s and ‘70s.
Blues, R&B, rock’n’roll, rock, prog, folk rock, country rock, psychedelia, glam, early metal, punk, new wave +++… will all find their way into the shows. Plus artists and bands, including, some who are well known and others who are more on the cult side. Stories behind classic singles and albums, record labels, venues, gigs… Not forgetting the people behind the scenes: producers, managers, promoters, writers, Svengalis – the people who made it all happen.
If it’s relevant to the music of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s I’ll be talking about it.
There will be some great music, some you’ll recognise and some that you might well be hearing for the first time.

Derek Shelmerdine is the author of Rock’n’Roll Unravelled.
RocknRoll Unravelled tells the story of rock’n’roll from its roots up until mid-1970s punk. Not just the story of the music but also the social events such as the Vietnam War and Civil Rights struggle because they had such an influence on the music.
