Elvis’s tip-of-the-cap to British skiffle music
At a Las Vegas concert in early February 1974 Elvis sang the title line of Lonnie Donegan’s skiffle hit,
Does Your Chewing Gum Lose its Flavour (On the Bedpost Overnight?).
Released as the title track of the 2006 concert CD, I Found My Thrill, it was a compilation track highlighting Elvis’s humour on stage.
The Lonnie Donegan Skiffle Group had a UK Top-3 hit in 1959 and an American Top-5 in 1961. The song’s first American chart appearance was back in 1924 from Billy Jones and Ernest Hare.
Lonnie Donegan’s first UK hit Rock Island Line in 1955, was the launching pad for skiffle which then heralded the British rock’n’roll scene.
Skiffle itself grew out of trad jazz, the British take on New Orleans jazz.
Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour is a great example of Elvis’s humour onstage.
