Tommy and Elvis in London
On Ken Bruce’s BBC Radio 2 show on 21 April 2008, Tommy Steele’s friend Bill Kenwright disclosed that Tommy had given Elvis a guided tour of London in 1958. Tommy Steele was the UK’s first rock’n’roll star and scored his first hit with Rock with the Caveman in 1956.
The day after the show, Tommy Steele confirmed the story to British newspaper Daily Mail. He told the Mail, “What happened … was secret and memorable” “I swore never to divulge what took place”.
Officially Elvis only ever set foot on British soil on 3 March 1960. He stepped off the plane in Scotland, on his way home from serving with the US Army in Germany.
There are some interesting twists in the story. For instance, Lamar Fike claims that he was the one who met Tommy Steele in London. Lamar Fike was in Germany with Elvis and was a member of the famed Memphis Mafia.
