In 1960 the Silver Beatles
had four different drummers in eight weeks
On 13 June 1960, shortly after returning from their Scottish tour with Johnny Gentle, drummer Tommy Moore played his last gig with the Silver Beetles, at the Jacaranda. He returned to his day job as a fork-lift driver at Garston Bottle Works.
Allan Williams opened a strip club in Liverpool’s Upper Parliament Street. For a week in July the Silver Beatles played the music for exotic dancer, Janice. That was John, George and Stuart Sutcliffe, with Paul on drums.
Still in July, Allan Williams heard Norman Chapman practising his drumming in his office, across the street from Williams’ own Jacaranda Club. He went over and persuaded Chapman to play with the Silver Beatles. He joined but played just three of the gigs at the Grosvenor Ballroom, Liscard, before being conscripted for two years National Service.
The Silver Beatles now needed a drummer to secure their first residency in Hamburg. On 12 August they auditioned Pete Best, and the rest, as they say – is history…
