In 2017 Billboard Magazine selected their 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of Time. Here at Rock’n’Roll Unravelled we are looking at rock’n’roll from its roots to 1970s punk. Consequently, we’ve chosen 24 songs from the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s and also included a couple from the 1980s for good measure.
The earliest song on the list, Oop Shoop at #83, comes from Shirley Gunter and the Queens. The 1950s songs also included, The Chantels’ Maybe at #60.
Incredibly, 27 of the 100 songs come from just four years, 1961 to 1964. Consequently, 14 of the songs on the show are from that period. In fact, this includes three of the Top-10 songs. Phil Spector’s wall of sound topped the chart, with The Ronettes’ Be My Baby at #1. He also took the #8 spot with The Crystals’ Then He Kissed Me.
The 1970s songs on the show include Sister Sledge, Labelle and The Pointer Sisters. Finally, from the 1980s, Bananarama’s Robert de Niro’s Waiting and from 1986, the latest 1980s song on the list, The Cover Girl’s Show Me.
Derek Shelmerdine presents the outline of the story. In addition Tony and his other guests relate their own comments and memories. Plus live music, poetry readings and some very lively conversation.
