Remembering 1971

The Beatles were each establishing themselves as solo artists. John with Imagine, George with My Sweet Lord (although, that did attract a plagiarism lawsuit), Paul launched his own band Wings and Ringo had his first solo UK hit single with It Don’t Come Easy.

Smoke on the Water

A fire at Frank Zappa’s concert in Switzerland inspired Deep Purple’s classic Smoke on the Water.

Pete Townshend’s follow up to Tommy floundered. Intended as another rock opera, Lifehouse was abandoned and became one of rock’n’roll’s great “lost” albums.

Marvin Gaye delivered what many consider to be his finest album, What’s Going On.

The Rolling Stones became tax exiles with their Goodbye Great Britain tour. Led Zeppelin gave their debut performance of Stairway to Heaven. The very unlikely combination of the Beach Boys and Grateful Dead performed together at the Fillmore East.
