1960s Musical Odyssey

In this Rock’n’Roll Unravelled Show, we’re taking a look at how the music developed in, arguably, the most formative decade in pop music history – the 1960s.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

The decade started with a divergence of music scenes on either side of the Atlantic. In the UK the 1950s skiffle and rock’n’roll bands morphed into beat group. Whereas, in America the golden age of rock’n’roll faded away and new musical scenes took over, including, surf music, dance crazes and Phil Spector’s wall of sound.

In 1964 the Beatles led the way for the “British Invasion” and for the next two years British artists and bands dominated the American music scene.

By mid-1966 beat groups had been replaced by the much harder-edged rock bands. Cream and Jimi Hendrix were at the forefront of this new music. The “British Invasion” was over and new American bands such as the Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane and the Doors were making their mark.

As the 1960s rolled into the 1970s, rock music had spawned an array of sub-genres including, psychedelic, prog, folk-rock, country-rock, metal, glam and jazz-rock.
