The Beatles and The Chants

The Chants were a 5-piece black vocal group, who came together in the Toxteth area of Liverpool in 1962. They brought a little bit of “Motown” to Liverpool.

When they made their Cavern debut on 21 November 1962, the Beatles were their backing group. They delivered a 20-minute R&B based set, which included the Dell Vikings song Come Go with Me. The was also a Quarry Men favourite.

Brian Epstein then became their manager for a short while.

On 7 December 1963, all four Beatles appeared on Juke Box Jury. The Chants were one of the featured artists and the Mop Tops voted their new single, I Could Write a Book, a hit.

Sadly, the Beatles were wrong and the single failed to trouble the charts. In fact, the Chants never managed to score any hit records.

On 31 May 1964, the Chants supported the Beatles at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London. Brian Epstein promoted the concert.

They parted company in the mid-1970s. Although, following the Chant’s demise, Eddy Amoo went on to find great success with the Real Thing.
