1967 The Summer of Love
The Summer of Love was the gateway from the first half to the second half of the 1960s. In the early 1960s the music was simple “boy meets girl songs. 1967 saw the music develop into the much more complex, rock music.
In America there a new era of West Coast bands came to the fore, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and the Fish and many others.
In the UK Pink Floyd were one of the pioneers of psychedelic music.
The Monterey Pop Festival introduced Jimi Hendrix and The Who to American audiences. It also made Janice Joplin famous.
Probably the most famous album of them all, Sgt Pepper and His Lonely Hearts Club Band was released to great critical success. In best album of all time, it still regularly tops the poll. It was also the first Beatles album that was the same on both sides of the Atlantic. It had the same sleeve and track listing.
Hippies descended on the Haight- Ashbury district of San Francisco in their thousands. The Haight-Ashbury residents organised the Death of Hippie march on 6 October 1967, to mourn the passing of the genuine article.
