Part 3: From Sgt Pepper to Let it Be
Listen to the show: date to be advised
The three phases of the Beatles’ career couldn’t be more different. Up to Sgt Pepper they were very much a single unit.
Around the time of Sgt Pepper everything started to change. John met Yoko Ono and he became much less focused on the band. Sadly, on 27 August 1967 their manager and guiding light, Brian Epstein died.
This led to a serious rift in the band. Paul wanted his wife’s father and brother, Lee and John Eastman to manage them. The others, led by John, wanted to call on the services of Allen Klein. This caused serious tension in the band and a major rift between John and Paul.
From Get Back to Let it Be
The sessions for the album Get Back started in January 1969. The Beatles could not agree amongst themselves on the final mixes and track listing. Time went by and they recorded what would be their last recorded album, Abbey Road. This was released in the autumn of 1969. Legendary producer Phil Spector was brought in the finalise the Get Back tapes and these became the Let it Be album, their last released album.
When the movie Let it Be opened in May 1970, none of the Beatles attended the premieres.
