PODCAST – Sam Leach Nearly The Beatles’ Manager

Might have been Sam Leach instead of Brian Epstein

Sam Leach was very nearly the Beatles’ manager

Brian Epstein saw the Beatles for very first time at Liverpool’s Cavern Club on 9 November 1961. He met with them for the first time three weeks later, to discuss becoming manager. On 10 December 1961 they agreed that he would become their manager.

The Beatles’ Aldershot gig, 9 December 1961

Sam Leach was a very successful Liverpool promoter and he too was looking to manage Beatles.

On 8 Dec 1961 the Beatles played Sam Leach’s Operation Big Beat, a series of gigs attracting literally thousands of people.

On 9 Dec 1961 Sam Leach promoted his first gig in the south of England, at Aldershot. It was billed as the Battle of the Bands, Liverpool v London. Sadly, it was poorly advertised and, again, literally, only 18 people turned up.

The following day the Beatles signed up with Brian Epstein. How different the Beatles’ career might have been if Sam Leach’s Aldershot gig had been successful!
