R&B Before Rock’n’Roll

Rock’n’Roll exploded onto the music scenes across the world in 1955, when Bill Haley and His Comets’ (We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock was played behind the opening credits for the movie Blackboard Jungle.

There were many influences behind rock’n’roll and one of the greatest was R&B. R&B itself, developed out of gospel, blues, jazz, jump blues and other sub-genres. R&B became a sort of danceable blues.

Black vocal groups, such as the Ink Spots and the Mills Brothers, emerged in the 1930s. By the 1940s the music was taking on a much harder edge. In the late 1930s and 1940s bands such as Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five, were laying the groundwork for R&B bands.

In this show we take a look at some of the most influential of the R&B artists.

Many of the rock’n’roll classics started out as R&B songs. The show’s playlist includes several of these: Big Maybelle’s Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On, Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five’s Keep a Knockin’ and Big Joe Turner’s Shake Rattle and Roll.

It’s all here, and more, in the Rock’n’Roll Unravelled ShowR&B Before Rock’n’Roll – Part 2.

The Rock’n’Roll Unravelled Show

How rock’n’roll came about. It’s transition into rock music in the mid-1960s and the array of rock genres which followed in the late 1960s and ‘70s.

Blues, R&B, rock’n’roll, rock, prog, folk rock, country rock, psychedelia, glam, early metal, punk, new wave +++… will certainly all find their way into the shows.
Plus artists and bands, however, some are well known and others are more on the cult side.
Stories behind classic singles and albums, record labels, venues, gigs…
Additionally, I’ll be looking at the people behind the scenes: producers, managers, promoters, writers, Svengalis – the people who made it all happen.

If it’s relevant to the music of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, I’ll be talking about it.
All this and great music. Although, some you’ll recognise and some you might well be hearing for the first time.
