PODCAST – Pete Best Sacked – Why?

Why was drummer Pete Best sacked from he Beatles and who was behind it?

Why was drummer Pete Best sacked from The Beatles?

On 16th August 1962 Beatles manager Brian Epstein called Pete Best into his office and unceremoniously sacked him. There was no warning, it came completely out of the blue. Pete Best said in an interview in 2018, “To this day, hand on heart, I don’t know the actual reason why I was fired”.

The Beatles with drummer Pete Best

Pete Best was fired on the eve of the band’s success, after two years as the Beatles’ drummer. They had already recorded the first version of their UK debut single, Love Me Do.

Pete Best’s drumming failed to impress producer George Martin. After the first recording session for Love Me Do, Martin told Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein he wanted a session drummer for the next recording session. Ringo Starr occupied the drum stool for the second recording session. Ringo’s playing also failed to impress Martin but they didn’t sack Ringo! For the third recording session, George Martin called in drummer Andy White

Contradiction surrounds the stories of why Pete Best was sacked. Some say it was because Brian Epstein wanted to distance the Beatles from Mona Best, Pete’s mother. Mona ran the Casbah Club in Liverpool and had a long-standing relationship with the group. In the Anthology book, John says, “We were always going to dump him”.

There is no definitive “truth”. Consequently, there is a mountain of speculation.
