David Bowie story

The Bowie story from the very beginning

The David Bowie story, from his first band right through the many characters he embraced across a spectacular career.

He joined the Konrads in 1962 and made his first-ever recording with them in 1963. After that, he was with a string of other bands across the 1960s. Sadly, not finding success in any of them.

His first taste of chart success came with Space Oddity in 1969. He was almost a one-hit wonder until Starman provided him with his next hit 1972.

After that his career really took off with the advent of glam rock. As a result, he created a succession of characters to fully express his music. This started with Ziggy Stardust and followed on with Aladdin Sane and the Thin White Duke.

In 1976 he relocated from Los Angeles to Berlin, in Germany. This certainly provided him with with the change he needed and he released his critically acclaimed Berlin trilogy of albums.

Following his Serious Moonlight world tour in 1983 he had a complete change of direction. He abandoned the flamboyant stage shows in favour of simply being the singer in a rock’n’roll band. As a result, his new band Tim Machine played loud, proto-grunge music in small venues.

In 2004 Bowie suffered a heart attack onstage in Germany. Consequently, his next album, The Next Day in 2013, was his first new album in 10 years. Knowing it would be his last album, Bowie released Blackstar. Sadly, he died on 10 January 2016.

Derek Shelmerdine presents the outline of the story. In addition Tony and his other guests relate their own comments and memories. Plus live music, poetry readings and some very lively conversation.
