60 years of The Beatles – The Fab Four

The Beatles (as The Quarry Men) started when John Lennon met Paul McCartney on 6 July 1957. Five years later, the Beatles became the Fab Four when Ringo Starr joined the band in the summer of 1962.

This is the Beatles story from the summer of 1962 when Ringo joined and they released their first UK single, Love Me Do. The story is a well-trodden path so we’ll focus on the landmarks and the inevitability of the split up. John and Paul were both involved in solo projects as early as 1966. This was an early sign that the two main song-writing members of the group already had an eye to the future. It was never, if, they break up, it was always, when…

It wasn’t just John and Paul. Ringo quit the group during the White Album sessions. George followed suit when he walked out of the Get Back recording sessions. (Phil Spector later stepped in and transformed Get Back into their final album, Let It Be.)

Derek Shelmerdine

Derek Shelmerdine is the author of the book Rock’n’Roll Unravelled. With its unique three-part structure, it tells the story of rock’n’roll from its roots to mid-1970s punk. More than that, the book looks at the social events which influenced the songs. Firstly, events such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights struggle in America. This also embraces individual events, such as the assassination of President Kennedy and Dr Martin Luther King.
