Beat music morphed into rock in the mid-1960s. The rock scene on America’s West Coast, particularly California, was a hotbed of new bands. Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Country Joe & the Fish, The Doors, Love and others, were blazing a trail for rock and psychedelia. All this and in San Francisco, Haight-Ashbury was the centre of the hippie universe. The story in this – 1960s West Coast Scene podcast.

The Beatles led the way with the British Invasion in 1964, a time when UK bands dominated the American music scene. The 1960s music scene changed dramatically in 1965 and 1966 when a new wave of American rock and psychedelic groups made an appearance, particularly in California’s Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The hippies and their counterculture brought a new sense of peace and love. Sadly, this new order was short lived. The hippie ideals were big business and it wasn’t long before they were taken over by record company executives and big business.

Despite this, the second half of the 1960s was a great time for music. The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, Country Joe and the Fish, and a host of other bands erupted onto the music scene.
