Part 2 of Derek Shelmerdine‘s Story of Rock’n’Roll – from its roots, to mid-1970s punk. All of the stories can be found in his book Rock’n’Roll Unravelled. This is the concluding part of the story.
Derek Shelmerdine is covering for host Tim Waters on his show Off the Beaten Track on Meridian FM, 14 December 2017.
The stories are all taken from Rock’n’Roll Unravelled and are punctuated with some great music, 33 songs in Part 2!
Part 1 took us from rock’n’roll’s roots in the mid 1970s up to the birth of rock music in the mid-1960s. Tonight we look at how rock developed and spawned other genres such as glam, prog, psychedelic, glam and pub rock. In the mid 1970s punk developed and took rock’n’roll back to simple, two-minute songs played in small, intimate venues.
The show includes:
On 6 December 1969: The Rolling Stones, Altamont and the spiritual end of the 1960s. To see the whole Gimme Shelter documentary film of the Altamont concert.
For all the stories behind this musical journey and 33 great songs, join me on Meridan FM – it’s going to be a whole lot of fun!
The show is based on information in Derek Shelmerdine’s book Rock’n’Roll Unravelled, which tells the story of rock’n’roll from its roots to mid-1970s punk. Not just the story of the music but also the external events which influenced it, such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights struggle.
